I keep hearing how people have ships that have +# hyperspace and other stuff, and i was wondering how would you go about getting "mods" for you ships?

As a general rule right now you can't they were given out/awarded from what I have heard from Red Scenarios and as Prizes, so the rest of us are out of luck, unless you buy one.

I may be wrong on this but I think that is the current state.

Most recently they were given out for community games held occasionally on IRC, but that was stopped about a year ago, so that isn't possible any longer. It might be possible someday when R&D is out, but that's still a very long way off.
