I have just started playing the Combine. The reason I've started playing is because I was looking for a bit of adventure on the Internet due to the fact I now have a computer capable of running most MMORPGs. I thought I would have the most fun if I joined the Smuggler's Guild with a couple of friends, but first I need a ship.
I've visited the Advosce Starport (Spar, Riflorii, Riflor, Riflora, (5,2) ) but founf nothing and no-one, and currently am travelling to the shop. Where might I reliably find a job so I can earn some credits?
You won't find much to do on your starting planet. You should join a faction--most pay monthly salaries that will eventually allow you to purchase your own ship, and fly one of theirs in the meantime.
All this advice and more available in THE GUIDE, linked at the top of every page in SWC!

I dare you to make less sense.
Are you a newbie, or do you have access to newbies?
If the faction you want to join requires you to have your own ship, I suggest you join a different one. As a new player, you don't have the money to buy a ship of your own.
You can change factions at any time, for any reason. Some factions might not appreciate you doing so, though, so it's good to check up on the faction beforehand.
But generally there is nothing to stop you joining one faction to earn some money, then switching factions later.
I have to say I agree with Togan, though - a faction that requires you to have your own ship doesn't sound like a very good faction!

The Smuggler's Guild describes its lifestyle as "like being a freelancer, but with the benefits of a faction". Besides, once I can get my own ship, I'll be the captain of it, won't I? That's the attraction.
For now, however, thank you for your help. Love the game!
OK, I've sent a request to Magnaguard Manufacturing with a view to getting some temporary work. One more question - is there any way I could buy passage from Riflorii to Ixtlar, where Magnaguard Manufacturing is located?
There's a few transporters advertised in the classifieds. (link is at the bottom of your menu bar) But you should check whether your faction provides transport for you first.
You can also see if there's a Starport on the planet you're on, that might offer transport to the planet you need to get to. It will cost you, but it might be easier for the faction in the long run. Best to check with them before you take action.

There is a starport nearby. I couldn't find anyone there, but it couldn't hurt to look around. I think MM do provide transport, but this will get 7 XP points (I think) and show me around.
That's all the questions I have. Thanks for getting me off to a firm start in the game!
