Nifty little thing, that nowadays you can see your ETA without having to press 'Enter Cockpit'.

That's for travel by ship/vehicle. By foot, you still have to press 'Position' if you want to see what your ETA is.

I won't go into details about my personal opinion about this, so I just have one question.

(Why) was this (intentionally) left out?

You'd need to ask Ondo about that, he implemented it. Odds are it's just an oversight though. Pointed him this way.
