How much time does the average person playing this game spend per day. It seems to me that you end up having to have this window active all day and periodically you have to come back and see what you are doing.
well, it all depends on what you're doing. if you're walking around a city or flying around a system in a fast ship, you'll have to log in several times a day to set a new destination.
if you're hauling raw materials (like me atm), i would only have to log in two days after starting, since then i'd be out of hyperspace and could continue my travel in subspace.
since i haven't seen you around much before, i'll assume you're a new player without a ship yet. i'd suggest joining a faction and have them assign you a ship, if possible with hyperdrive so you can start exploring the galaxy and see other systems (hyperspace travel generally takes longer than subspace travel). you might even be able to do some work for your faction by doing that.
You don't ever have to check in. Aside from what Togan said, your faction might require you to report in weekly or so, or maintain a certain activity rating for logging in every few days.
Basically, you choose how active you want to be.

I dare you to make less sense.
Are you a newbie, or do you have access to newbies?
I keep trying to find out more info on faction population. I haven't figured out what I want to run yet, but I also want to increase my chances of getting accepted and making an impact (whatever that may be). Like choosing a faction that had 30 members versus 200.
Is that information available once I get my password?
the actual number of members for each faction isn't publicly available, only people within the faction with the right privileges and stockholders can see the membership, but all factions have at least 4 or more active members, else they'd get dissolved :)
you are currently in or on darkness if you are reading this, every action is done using the darkness program which is interfaced with the combine website IE: you send mail while your logged in to the combine via the little envelope at the top there ^ that's mailing through darkness. its mostly referred to as doing an action through darkness because well we waited so damn long to get it and want to use it as much as possible and before there was "darkness" there was a program called ICIS (man that was a great program) that was sepratly downloaded and that is where you would log on to travel, exchange cred's ect.ect. darkness just made everything easier while adding alot of nifty features although they did take out that hyperspace sound I like so much
/me wonders if you could get ICIS somewhere to reminess
