I'm new and just joined a faction. I'm looking around the city center where I have started the game and I'm wondering where I go to purchase personal articles. It looks like it takes quite a bit of time to travel around on foot so I thought I would ask someone how to do this and the importance of it before taking hours and hours, if not days to walk around looking for a trading post or the like.

The basic items, like knives and belts, can be purchased by entering the NPC shop in your city and hailing the NPC inside. For the "other" items, you'll want to talk to traders and production factions, to ask them to sell you a flamethrower or body armour.

This may be a stupid follow-up question, but are these NPC shops identifiable on the city grid? If so, I'm not looking hard enough... or must I travel about in search of them?

There aren't NPC shops on all the planets.

When a shop is there it stands out as it has shop written on the top of it (one of the few which do). I would post a link to a picture of one but am not sure where they are.

Some of the factions forums do maintain a list of where they are in the galaxy so it may be worth asking the faction you have joined or at least check their holosites.

If you started in your racial starting city, you might also look for the Speeder Rental NPC to help you get around faster.

Incidentally, do all the shops have NPC traders? I' sure the one I went into didn't have one at all.

They do, typically in the upper-left room I believe.
