I picked the name Ziro Static and was turned down for a membership. I was told the name didn't sound like a real name. First off ZIRO and ZERO ARE REAL FIRST NAMES! And STATIC is just as realistic a sirname as SOLO or SKYWALKER. I am highly offended by your refusal to accept a character that I spent hours coming up with, to the point that I have lost my interest in joining the combine. I suppose that it's no big loss for either of us. I appologize if this post sounds like a tantrum, I do not mean to sound like I'm being a baby. I'm just very disapointed.
I don't see a clear question here, so I'll just start typing and hope I stumble across the answer.
"Zero/Ziro Static" does sound like random words put together instead of a handle, just like "Red Wolf" would. That said, the handle rules have a good bit of subjectivity in them, so it's possible that had someone else looked at your app, they might have accepted it. Some of the people who process apps [like myself] are more strict about handles than others.
I certainly understand the effort that can go into selecting a name for your character that reflects your own creativity and perhaps something about that character, so I am sure you understand our efforts in policing the handles of members so that they best represent our community.

I dare you to make less sense.
Are you a newbie, or do you have access to newbies?
Ziro Static sounds like random words put together? I suppose John Smith would have been acceptable.... Whatever. I'm not interested in role-playing with a group that lacks the vision to allow free creativity to flow from it's players. You want acceptable names? How about these, SVEN MARL, or ETA GORMO, or JAX DAMIOA, or VELSPAR NOMAR. I could come up with ridiculous "alien-sounding" names all day. What's the fun in that? I want to name a character something that has meaning to me. The name ZIRO I took from one of my favorite comedians, Zero Mostel, and the name STATIC as an allusion to the characters past. I can understand the need for discrimination, but only to the extent of keeping out name's like RED WOLF or DIRTY DOG or D3V1Ls @DvoCa+E..... But come on, when does the need for "authenticty" end and the desire to enjoy creative science fiction material begin. Unless I can be convinced that the SWcombine is comitted to addressing this as a real issue (or at least apologizing to me) I will recommend to my friends, and on my blog that this is not a very good website.
No one's saying sorry for your shitty choice of names. You can't use the name of an Important Real Life person anyway. See my name over there? Randomly Generated. And i love it. Go open up a book and figure one out. We don't care if you don't recommend us. If this is the best you can do we don't really want you. Seriously. Just pick a different name. Sven Nomar Actually sounds like a pretty sweet name to me. We don't need to convince Anyone. 3780 Members are Convinced. Obviously your the Minority.
As the person who declined your request, I can say that I'd probably have allowed either Ziro (more likely) or Static (less likely) if paired with a different name for the other half of the handle. However, when put together, I didn't consider "Zero Static" (spelling being irrelevant, really) to sound like a real name.
It wasn't my intention to disappoint you, and I won't apologise for it, but it is quite impossible to determine if someone is sincere, or simply trying to use a variation of their completely-non-name-like XBox Live account.
Lose the "Static" and put a different surname together with Ziro, and you should be good. If you're still interested, that is... as your hanging around these forums to register your displeasure suggests.

The attitude of that last response is uncalled for. Is this the manner in which SWcombine chooses to communicate with an unsatisfied guest? I don't see how you can treat a patron of your site this way. I admit that having nearly 4,000 members is impresive. But isn't GROWING THE POPULATION of a web-based game the main way that it is sustained? I am a programmer, an artist, and writer, and a huge star wars fan. I understand your side of things. Don't get me wrong, I want your website to be successful. That is why I'm giving you FEEDBACK. You need to start looking at the people who want to join your site as customers. And when one has been given a dis-service you should see how you can and if can make the accomodation. If no accomodation can be made than an apology is in order. Bad word of mouth is a killer and if you send too many people away unhappy then you will be the one losing out in the end. I have always felt that it is a man's duty to share his feelings. In the end it is a benifit to listen to someones complaints (if you take them to heart) you will learn something. If I didn't care than I wouldn't be writing this post. If anyone has taken insult to what I posted earlier than I would say it's no more of an insult to them than declining the name I chose was to me. One turn deserves another. And to add further to the insults of my original name I want to address the above post by saying that I don't see how you can tell someone they can't choose the name of someone who is famous when it clearly staits in the rules that you CAN NAME A CHARACTER LUKE. LUKE IS THE FIRST NAME OF THE STAR OF STAR WARS. And since I only used the persons first name then it was ok. BTW isn't there a member named Starkiller on here? I think it was mentioned in the rules, Either that or it was a random example. If so that is doubly unfair, bc it was the original name Lucas had instead of Skywalker (and there for totally un-original), and it doesn't sound alien at all. How is that name ok, but mine isn't? If it was just an example than it was a poor example to use.
P.S. the name's I mentioned in my last post are all real names SVEN (Norwegian) VELSPAR(FINNISH) etc. and the last names are german words.... one of them means something bad. So those names were really no different than the first one I chose. Excepting the fact that I have no personal attachment to them.
Apology or not Hal Brendon, thank you for telling me why you made your decision. Hearing it from you makes it go down a little easier. Especially the way that you phrased it. However, as I said before, I am not interested in attempting to join again. I'm on the internet at work and home, and I sleep like Scarface. It's hardly out of desperation that I remain. I only wanted to have some closure on the incident. and offer what feedback I could give, and you would take. I don't imagine my opinion is very welcome though, at least I haven't really been given the feeling that it is. So I suppose I won't post anymore after this. Although I do not think I would give this game a positive view if asked I'm not going to go around to every star wars site in my favorites and dis it (though without an apology that is what I really want to do.) I won't in light of the fact that a decent explanation was provided.
They've sent people away for many reasons and everyone's threatened to hurt the game somehow. Yet membership keeps growing. Figure that one out.
You have to realize that some people predate some rules. Like Phryss or Syn (one name rather than a first and last) or, as you pointed out, Roy Starkiller.
I would suggest you at least give it a try before you turn away from it completely. BTW, ignore Rogmi. Everyone else does.
Not everyone who responses to post are official responses from the game. Remember this is not a professionally made game, but a game made by fans like yourself. Some are helpful, while others are harmful. We can not stop people from posting, but some of us who are official admins can be helpful.
Accepting or declining of a name is that of the personal opinion of the person doing the job at the time they have free do check over new accounts.

Wow, these are all ridiculous names, we should decline their memberships too. :P
This is really just an interesting sidenote to Phyrss' comment about policing people's names to best represent our community. Sure, Ziro Static sounds a bit.. er.. different.. but everyone's name in this game is. This is a Star Wars game. As long as people don't pick exact character names from official SW canon, use proper spelling and punctuation, then there really shouldn't be a problem with any nickname, providing it's not offensive in some way.
But, the people who approve Handles are doing their job accordingly - and they do a good job - so kudos to them. As previously stated, there are different people who approve handles, so different people will have different opinions on what handles will get accepted, and which will not.
Don't take it personally, really. Okay, you can be a bit upset that your first Handle didn't get accepted, but just submit another and I'm sure it will get approved. Who knows, you might come back with something better.
If there was a rule against ridiculous names, then I'd have a lot more fun doing join requests.
As it stands, there is no such rule, so I find myself either approving the less ridiculous ones (accompanied by a sigh), or flat out ignoring them for someone else to deal with if I can't bring myself to accept a more ridiculous name.
"Ziro Static" is not ridiculous, un(?)fortunately. It's just... Zero Static. Words, not a name. And by the rules, it gets declined, despite what may be the applicant's best intentions.
Sad, but true.
If it was purely a judgement call, without specific rules, it would have a far better chance than a number of ridiculous names. But then, you probably wouldn't want me handling applications on a pure judgement call. =)
