There are several ways that you can accomplish both of these tasks, however rather then explain them to you I would like to direct you to The Guide. There is a link to it on the bar across the top of your screen, though you can also click here.
Please read this carefully as it is designed to assist you with most of your early game questions.

Be sure to take a few minutes to research the Factions if you can. Some are very good, others are not. If you ask nicely maybe Orion will have some suggestions for you. I'm biased against certain factions, so do not feel I should make any recommendations.
I recommend you to check the salary or wages pages directly at each faction or government, if it is a Government and they pay less then 500k a month I would not bother with it, if it is a faction that has been around more then a year, and they pay less then 500k a month don’t bother with it. Today’s market is not a place you visit if you get 100k a month, and that restricts your freedoms to get that ship and actually start earning money, you can make your very first million in the very first month of game play out here if you only read that guide and learn how to handle the controls, there are plenty of people out here that is desperate to get their hands on active players to work for them, there are building wars that needs skippers there are Items that is needed to be picked up, there are droids and assets to collect, you can make whole lot of good credits if you only save up for YT-1210 with plenty of cargo space, and then roam around in this galaxy as a freelancer. First pick is always the hard one, take the one that payee most if it is fast credits you want to make, and then get your own YT-1210 and work from there. Stay honest and you can make a decent living in this galaxy for sure.
Well Talak, I disagree with you, I joined a faction where our leader's salary is only 400k, I personally am making 200k a month. Am I disappointed in the faction I joined in December when I first joined the combine? Not at all. As a matter of fact, knowing what I know now, I would make the same decision.

Sure but he is asking about getting a ship and making credits. You don't get that fast if you do not work for the highest bidder around here. I been working for factions and governments with different pay scales of course, and many have been under 500k no question about that, but the best credits I have made up to this date has been as a Freelancer when I temporarily join a faction and do their work when they have needed it, not as long-time serviceman for any faction or government, there you get all the other stuff. Like community and such and sometimes these member cities are offered and other benefits but all that at the cost of freedom to exploit free trade etc, it always cost something when you are a long-runner. Does this make me a spokesman for Freelancers? Of course not I understand your point as well Mcphee, not everyone is fit to be independent entrepreneurs, I have learned the long and hard way how to get what I want. This is one way I do not say all should do it, I am just telling my side of the coin how I nearly got what I want. Includes hard work in darkness of course, honesty and someone to put faith in your handy-work, it works for me. :)
Well, as I said, determine your needs and desires. Then choose a path to take you there.
I joined a faction that provided me with a ship to fly and some great options to make some deals and make some serious money. Were I more agressive, I'd have made probably double what I have now, but I figure I have assets worth around 10 million or so, I can live with that.

Got to add that Drakar has become a bit eccentric over the years even if he is a bit melancholic about long-runner work vs Freelancer works. I have had him as my personal trainee and well, all I can tell is that I certainly got a lot from his knowledge this far, and probably a lot more then I would have ever earned in any Faction or Government as a long-runner. The galaxy shift from day to day, so it is really no use to get hooked up or to involved in one Faction or Government if credits are what you seek. The next day all you have worked for can be gone, there are a lot of examples of those in the Combine.
Three advises for free
1) Do not except anything but cash or Vehicle/Vessel ownership as payment. 2) Do not accept member cities as substitute for real salary as this galaxy is far from perfect when it comes to larger Governments. A leader today may be a thief or wanted and hated even banned member of the community tomorrow and that city you gave up months and months of hard work for and pay for to earn may be worth nothing, as if the owner of the power generators or now days even shield generators goes berserk and makes it a quarantined zone you evidentially will get burned. 3) Do not work for anything less then the cheapest snub-fighter average price at Centrepoint Marketplace, market moves all the time, keep an eye on it, as long as your earn enough to get yourself a Cloakshape/H with your first monthly pay, it is OK.
All depends on what you want in this game, I wanted independence and freedom, Drakar helped me to reach that goal for sure, sign contracts, do a bit of work there and here, learn from doing different stuff in Darkness and you are worth every single credit a Faction or Government spend at your know-how as they can always be sure to get the job done, you get rich and everyone is happy. lol
You can also try out ship rental, and be independent from the get go, if you wish. However, it is (probably) more effort that way, and you pretty much have to be active and stay on top of things to make it work out I think.
You can check the link above my sig for my newbie rental offer, as well as where to go for some newbie help programs regardless. And, be sure to check the classifieds for other rental offers too, if you want to be independent anyway. Otherwise, do some research on the forums and through DM on the various factions.
Some people are resistant to joining a faction early on because they like the idea of being a freelancer out in the galaxy. However, for this game, it's really best to join a faction that has some kind of training program or that is big enough to promptly pick up new people off of the planets they start on.
You can leave later and become a freelancer, but to get up to speed on the game and get un-stranded from your first planet, a faction is really the best way to go.
