I'm working in a factory for the first time, and I have all the mats needed, it tooled, and I'm the operator of the building. each time I tell it to start it gives me this message:

You requested that 10 workers produce this project but none are available.

I have 10 workers in the room with me, I'm their supervisor. Whats wrong?

I guess factories are similar to mines
And there you have to set them to 'work' (done via the ACTION button in the control room.)

They aren't similar to mines. See Mikel's answer it is most likely. Also, if the NPC's are already assigned to your faction, try and leave and come back in with them. Sometimes that fixes it for me.
