I have not been building any XP points for travelling since the server tried updating over the weekend. I walk from corner to corner of the city i'm in to build xp while waiting for my trainers' instructions but since the weekend it hasn't worked. Is this a bug/glitch or is there a reason i don't know of?

That sounds like a bug then, did you create a bug report in the bugbase yet?
If not check if there is already one posted and if it isn't, post one yourself: http://bugs.swcombine.com/ (if you don't have an account there yet, please create one)
