In simple terms.... get an FK-7 or a Groundhog (the more the better linked with NPC controlled wingmates, up to 12 total vehicles)
Go where you want to scan and hit Actions --> Prospect.
Start Prospecting.

That easy.

And you should also have sufficient funds to pay for the prospection, its normally around 10-30K?....:)

Factions do so I doubt its any different for players.

10-30? more like 10-12k as far as I've ever seen.
(I prospected for roughly 45,000XP... oy)

Cost of Prospecting = 10000 * (1 + Tax + Crime )
Tax: Tax Level of Planet
Crime: Crime Level of Planet
