I hope this is the right place to ask this. The newest SIM news says Players vs Creatures will come out soon and I am wondering how close you have to be to a aggressive creature for it to attack you?

Because while prospecting I came across group of rancors, sometime even in a city and last thing I wanna see when I start to prospect is a rancor running at me from other side of the square and tearing my defenceless groundhog apart.

I think the appropriate response would be "you need to wait until creature combat rules have actually been released, not just announced." =P

As Mikel said, creature combat rules etc are still in the process of being decided upon. SO any sort of guessing will not be that useful.
