I think Zack was expecting NPC pilots to boost your own skills. However as stated above they are not implemented at the moment and do nothing. It is theorised that they will simply allow you to replace your own skills for flying ships, rather than boost your own.

This makes more sense than adding to your skill.
Given that a ship's Hyper Speed has a far greater impact on travel speed than Piloting Skill does, I'm more excited by the idea of (eventually) being able to modify ships with improved engines. >:)
Ah was expecting that NPC Pilots would eventually allow you to fly more than one type of ship (ie freighter/capital ship with fighter escorts), or act like Astromech droids and allow you to go potter in your freighter while they continue the flying
Its possible they will be used for wingmen, but not for what droids do. The intention is that droids and NPCs will do similar but different things. Preventing travel abortion when you enter a docked entity is the droids area of expertise, and NPCs will not have that ability.
Ah have a couple freighter pilots, and a cap ship pilot, plus even a couple barge pilots and just working on building up a squadron of Chir`Daki pilots :D

Remind me not to cross you when space combat comes out. The last thing I want to see is you and your flying squadron of Chir`Daki closing in on me. XD
The X-Ceptor is cobbled together in junkyards from random pieces of damaged X-Wings & TIEs, the Chir`Daki was specially designed in a factory using X-Wing & TIE designs (may not be as good as either full version, but still vastly superior to the the 'uglies')
And before mah pilots get to even sit in one of mah ships, she has to first prove herself in both an X-Wing & a TIE
Although we can already fly a squadron of fighters by ghost piloting* them I figured that if combat were implemented than fighters piloted by ghost pilots would be either pretty weak or have that ability removed completely. I hope that if this is the case than NPC pilots would then be able to pilot fighters and use their own skillset instead of being set at a low skill level or borrowing a fraction of the PC's skill level controlling the squadron.
