Unique means exactly that, there is only one. If there were none, but a DC, then only the first one built would be unique. There is only one, no DC and no one can produce them. If it is destroyed, then there are none.
R&D is not yet implemented, not sure if it will be possible to do that to a unique ship, if you even could get near it in your lifetime. Rest assured, you are not alone in drooling over unique stuff :)
Exactly, From my understanding they are ships that usually have a long history behind them, take the Supremacy attack ship, it's cobbled together from various Republic warships, or the Scurrg H-6 Bomber designed as a prototype from the Naboo corps in a starfighter simulation game. So it's a good bet that when (or hopefully IF) the admin team allow their construction Unique ships will be something that has a rich history and has a reason why only one was ever made.
Uh, the Supremacy wasn't cobbled together from anything - its a warship from 5,000 years before the Battle of Yavin. Alex just liked it and worked a Red Scenario in to 'find' one and get it. I believe most of the unique ships are either from Red Scenarios or admin gifts.
So if I correctly understood, when SWC was more RP-based and less a loot, trade & arrest game, the admins were more involved into fulfilling player's wishes rather than doing multi-hunting?
“Firstly, there is more the admin's job than multi-hunting although that is certainly consuming plenty of time.
Secondly, far back the admin/player issue was a much more collaborative effort in a smaller community and the Red Scenarios were a way in which development of the game was much different. It wasn't so much about fulfilling player's wishes at is was being more involved in the IC development of the game which has now changed with the evolution of the admin roles and responsibilities and the game's changing dynamics.

aaaanyway, to address to the question at hand (login being irrelevant to the question posed)....
