Perhaps you are not the owner of the blaster. You may be the carrier, as you picked it up, but it is probably owned by someone else.
If you go to Items submenu (under Personal) on the right hand side, you can click on Manage Carried Items. You should see the Owner, Quartermaster and Carrier on that page.

The number of times I've seen bounties placed on people for picking up an item that was just laying there means you might want to DM the owner and see if they want it.
Items are the only items where anyone can use them to their full abilities whether you own it or not. Nothing can stop you using it to your hearts content.
This is the perfect time to get some credits. Tell the owner that you will give it back to him for the CPM average. If he gives you the money, you should put the blaster down. He can't call you a scammer or thief, since it was on the ground.
Tabty is correct. Being as you have to use export functions to find the item's location normally, its illegal to use said method when a player is holding it.
“He can't call you a scammer or thief, since it was on the ground.”
I'd disagree with this. The other player owns it. If you are taking someone else's property without permission, regardless of where it is, that is stealing. It would make you a thief.
He can't call you a scammer, but he could call you a thief. But to be honest, anyone who leaves items lying around in a city or whatever is just asking for someone to take it.
Thanks for the info. I guess I should drop character as I set him up as a thief/spy like character. but it seems it is not a good character for this game.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to best type of character to play? I checked the guide but it seems vague. Your can be a theif but only if your a scammer...you can be a combat specialist only in certain areas and lets face it with the amount of billionaire army out there you'll most likely just die right away.
I guess pilot is the only real profession to go for?
There's nothing wrong with doing a thief/spy character your just likely to anger other players who have no issue with paying to have you killed. In fact there are a few players who kill people just for fun.
Mate, this game is boring, Being a criminal is less boring, that's a paraphrase of something keir once said. Hold steady and hold true, A criminal's life is for you. Just for the Love of Jesfa and Syn, don't scam for 70m and act superior. Do something big and great.
I'd try to stick to the thief role. Just think broadly of what you maybe able to do.
Fleur was a well known bounty hunter which I am sure had some sneaky tricks and skills. Maybe try and do jobs for bigger groups as a contractor, building illegally, scouting territory, etc.
I will say that I find it weird that you got upset about finding a gun and taking it with you, then saying your character was planned as a thief anyway. :)
When it comes to it, just imagine what your character is like, what he does, goals, and the stick to it. It may evolve as time goes but it will help give you direction. Then don't forget to role play it.
