How do you calculate the size of a planets gravity well? I don't want to get damaged the first time I do it. Thanks for the help.

click on sublight, avoid the red squares. Thats about all there is to it. No need to calculate anything.

The equation determining the size of the gravity well is round(PlanetSize / 6).

This can be found in the Rules, under the Movement section for Planetary Gravity Wells.

But how then do you calculate the size of a planet, or is there a place to look for it?

The rules page for the planet tells you the size. Or you can look at the planet's map and count the number of squares.

If you want to ask how do you calculate the gravity well of a planet to start a hyperspace travel without getting damaged:
There is no need to calculate anything.
Ther gravity well of every planet is shown at the sublight-travel-map. It's the red backgrounded areas around the planet.
The current game prevents you from starting a hyperspace flight when you are within a gravity well. Just leave the gravity well with the sublight travel, then start your hyperspace travel.
