Planet: Artesia
Table of Contents [hide]

No two planets are identical; however, some stand out from the rest more than others. This is especially true of Artesia. While most planets rotational plane are approximately in line with their orbital planes, Artesia is one of only a few that rotates orthogonal to its direction of travel. Two icy polar regions can be found on the western and eastern most sides of the planet. Between the arctic wastelands is a warm zone comprised of erratic ecosystems; wetlands interspersed with deserts, barren rock formations, and extensive cave systems.

The predictable, paradise like weather of the central zone has attracted colonists for eons, resulting in a diverse culture of inhabits who call the planet home. No sentient life evolved naturally on Artesia, and the native flora was driven extinct by invasive species brought by some of the earliest visitors. What is lacking in native fauna is made up for by the local flora. Visitors are often drawn to view one of the several large forest or jungles scattered across the landscape with bluish-purple trees over three hundred meters in height. Fascinatingly, these woodlands are not comprised of individual trees, but massive organisms with roots stretching for hundreds of kilometers, the tree-like offshoots extending from the tendrils. These monstrous plants consume most of the planet’s rainfall outside of the poles, leaving the rest of the surface dry and void of anything living.

Several hundred years ago, the planets Ministry of Science partnered with the College of Arts and Expressions to produce an exhibit of both science and culture. For several decades experts from around the planet gathered information regarding all the sentient species then living on Artesia. Using this research, the planet’s best artists produced a colossal sculpture spanning several kilometers depicting the various political hardships, governmental failures, and persecutions that spurred sentients from around the galaxy to leave their homes and settle on Artesia. When unveiled to the galactic community, it was met with varied reactions. While many cultures hailed it as revolutionary and breathtaking, those cast in a bad light by the project found it offensive and vulgar. Some so much so that a skirmish occurred when several planetary governments insisted the Collage be demolished. The fighting was brief and ended quickly, but not before an Artesia city in the east was reduced to ruins after an orbital bombardment ignited dormant volcanos, which remain active to this day.
