Planet: Ibanjji V
Table of Contents [hide]

Ibanjji V is slightly smaller and slightly further from the system’s star than her sister gas giant, Ibanjji III. Maintaining an orbit approximately one hundred fifty-five million kilometres from Ibanjji, Ibanjji V boasts an average temperature a good twenty standard degrees below the freezing point of carbon dioxide. The planet rotates on its axis faster than many planets its size, completing a complete rotation every fifteen standard hours and making a complete orbit of the system’s star every five hundred fifteen local days. The atmosphere is composed of roughly sixty-five percent hydrogen, with the rest comprising helium, carbon dioxide, sulphur and oxygen. There are some traces of rarer elements, such as tibbanagas and several hydrocarbons that are extracted for use in local industries.

Apart from the tibbanagas extraction and processing industry, which is common to almost all gas giants in the galaxy, the planet is also well known as a hub for the production of machine tools and heavy equipment for factories, which are used both locally and on other planets in the system, as well as hostile environment protection gear such as vacuum suits and toxic gas filters. Given the hostile atmospheric conditions, or even the complete lack of atmosphere on many of the system’s worlds, the products manufactured here sell quickly, generating a constant stream of profit for the government.

Life for the millions of factory workers in the floating cities is somewhat constrained, as the local government favours the interests of business owners, somewhat to the detriment of workers. While some worker benefits are mandated by local laws, their enforcement can vary widely from city to city, leaving some workers at the mercy of their employers. Feeding the teeming billions on the planet is no small matter and is accomplished by a combination of importing whole fresh foods and water from neighbouring agricultural worlds, storing them in vast refrigerated warehouses until they are needed, and growing edible fungi on a substrate comprised of imported soil and the treated waste of the planet’s population.
