Planet: Bothawui
Table of Contents [hide]

Bothawui, home planet of the Bothan people, is a planet with a long and storied history. A member of the Galactic Republic since sometime between seventeen-thousand and twelve-thousand years BCGT, the planet has been attacked numerous times by hostile forces, including the Ord Mastreans during the Twenty Third Pius Dea Crusade, by the Krath during the Great Sith War, and by the Sith Empire during the Great Galactic War. Bothawui was, in fact, where the forces of the Galactic Republic won their first victory of that war and where the Jedi and Republic soldiers stationed there made a notable sacrifice to prevent the planet from falling into the Sith Empire's hands.

A major reason for this frequent conflict is Bothawui's location, at the junction of four major hyperlanes - the Bothan Run, the Kaaga Run, the Reena Trade Route, and the Manda Merchant Route. Historically, this led to Bothawui being a meeting and trading place for merchants from all over the galaxy. It was said that if something couldn't be bought on Bothawui, then it wasn't worth buying. All these visiting merchants soon learned a simple truth - that the native Bothans always seemed to know what was going on. So keyed in were the locals that merchants began to say that the Bothans must be spying on them and knew about each assassination, espionage attempt, and sabotage before it actually happened. These rumors gave birth to the story of the existence of the Bothan Spynet, something which the Bothans actively cultivated and quietly made a reality, developing it into the most advanced information gathering network in the galaxy. It has, however, proven detrimental to Bothawui's economy, as many major trading houses closed their offices and relocated offworld to avoid the theft of corporate and trade secrets. This has led to many cities being abandoned over the years, until today only two major urban areas remain.

This reduction in urbanization has benefited Bothawui's wildlife. Krak'jyas, Bothawui's top terrestrial predator has returned from the edge of extinction to once again dominate Bothawui's plains. Stealthy, semi-aquatic skar'klas once again hunt the highlands. Numerous species of fish and whales swim in Bothawui's numerous small oceans and the shortgrass plain is home to large herds of grazing animals such as nerf and gankujos. Bothawui's central highlands contain several peaks taller than seven thousand meters and represent the planet's only year-round snow cover. Bothawui is a beautiful planet to visit, but visitors should be careful what they tell the locals.
