Planet: Shogun
Table of Contents [hide]

One of only two known planets in the Quence sector, Shogun closely orbits the star that shares its name. As a result of the proximity, stellar winds and flares have long since stripped Shogun of its atmosphere, leaving it inhospitable to all but the most determined travelers. Volcanic activity covers nearly eighty percent of the planet's surface. Small amounts of land that have been spared from lava are pockmarked by eons of meteorite impacts, exposing fields of dazzlingly radiant crystals formed from cooling magma. Despite the extreme surface conditions, several small population centers have established themselves in the largest of Shogun's craters. The rims of these craters serve as natural flood levees to keep the lakes and rivers of lava at bay. Inside the craters, the basins also provide respite against the hostile planet. As the cooler gases settle to the bottom, the hotter, deadlier heat rises away from the cities. Even in the most sheltering craters, however, thermal protective gear is a necessity for surviving the extreme temperature of the volcanic planet.

Standing in any of the cities, one would find themselves entrenched by the steep crater walls. During the day, the harsh white light from the adjacent Shogun star dominates every other radiant emission outside. Even the reflection of the rays off the igneous rock surrounding the cities is blinding for most species without sensory shielding. On the night side of the planet, the oppressive sunlight is replaced by an amber glow, rising from the magma beyond the crater walls, tinting both cityscapes and sky an ominous red. Periods of particularly heavy volcanic activity eject massive plumes of ash that loom over the terrain. While these plumes help reduce the overwhelming daylight, at night they transform the sky into roiling clouds, saturated blood-red, from the lava below.

Throughout its history, the dangers and challenges of Shogun have continually forged the small groups brave enough to inhabit it into proud, tight-knit communities. Despite continual setbacks, the people of Shogun remained undeterred and continued to expand their cities. Ancient legends regale Shogun as a mystical site for the devout Taung, though some experts have questioned whether the visions they experienced were caused by prophecy, or volcanic gases. Regardless, Mandalore the Ultimate’s vision birthed the tradition of allowing non-Taung to adopt Mandalorian culture if they honored its customs and proved themselves in battle.
