The backpack of the Republic Commando Katarn Armour is an integral part of this highly prized set. It was not only storage for ammunition and explosives, but it was also possible to adapt the backpack for many high risk missions. Some of these changes included the attachment of an oxygen tank for aquatic and vacuum assignments, a large bacta dispenser for more serious injuries, or an external communications array for coordinating movements on the battlefield.

The Republic's research and development department designed the backpack to distribute weight evenly across the backs of the commando's wearing them. The backpack also made the individual commandos instantly recognizable by the last two digits of the trooper's ID number displayed across the back.

In recent times, it is easiest to find these pieces across the remains of battlefields left over from the Clone Wars. Due to neglect, many of the systems have stopped functioning and they are now only useful to store items, like any other backpack would be. The main interest in these backpacks is from collectors, who seek to own a complete set of the Republic Commando armour set, making these backpacks valuable as antiques.
