WED-Series 'Treadwell' (Labour)
Table of Contents [hide]

The WED-Series droid is a version of the Treadwell models designed and manufactured by Cybot Galactica during the height of the Galactic Republic. These labor droids were specifically designed for repair duties and can be found all over the galaxy, including in space.

The WED Treadwell droid is quite versatile, with the ability to interchange the extending arms. A Treadwell droid can have many tool attachments and utilizing the many possibilities with these configurations, one Treadwell can replace three sentient mechanics.

The droid has a wide treaded base; most times, the treads were made of rubber or metal, but some designs have seen this replaced with magnetic treads. This would allow it to zip around the exterior of a starship while in space, repairing hull breaches or turret damage. A spindly, telescopic stalk is mounted in the center with a monocular or binocular visual sensor attached to the top. The telescopic stalk allows it to raise and lower itself to be able to fit comfortably under the hull of a raised A-wing in a hangar. Due to its simplistic but effective design, the Treadwell droid was relatively fragile and required frequent maintenance. Rather than spend the credits on maintaining these droids, often due to their availability and low cost, they were kept working to their optimal capacity and then recycled once they were no longer providing efficient work.

The origin of the name for the Treadwell droids is one of rumors and legends. The story goes that some Cybot Galactica executives were touring an engineering research and design facility and came upon a meeting of engineers discussing the plans for an effective repair droid. They were designing a type of droid that could maneuver on the exterior of large capital ships while in space, repairing any damage to the hull and/or turrets; be an effective repair droid in a hangar; as well as appeal to the hardworking moisture farmers across the galaxy.

Upon presentation of the Treadwell Droid, the Cybot executives marveled at the possibilities of the potential windfall this type of droid could bring with its many applications and versatility of marketing to the Galactic Republic and all the corporations of the galaxy. As well as to the blue-collar working-class farmers and mechanics. One executive, who later was identified as the President of Cybot Galactica, walked up to the engineers after the presentation and stated, “That is a well-executed design. Keep up the good work.” The engineers were so elated when they found out the President was in on their presentation that they decided to reclassify the Treadwell series as the WED-Series Treadwell droid. To this day, no one knows for sure what the WED stands for. Some believe the rumors that it’s a well-executed design. Others speculate that it stands for Wide-base Engineering Droid or Wheel-based Engineering Droid.
