Based on a human replica design, the Sentinel Droid was created to replace living soldiers, guards and other security personnel. Though the design is now antiquated and has since been replaced with better, more efficient hardware, at the time of production the Sentinel was the epitome of military droid technology.

Being unique in function at the time of its release, the Sentinel Droid line created a new market for military and security forces. The droid made available a soldier that did not grow bored, require sleep, food, or training; basic maintenance would provide the Sentinel with a long operational life. Production standards for the Sentinel equipped the droid with a light blaster, enhanced optics and basic projectile weapons skills. As one of the earliest designs of military droids, the combat software loaded into the Sentinel was quite basic and just barely brushed the capabilities of later models.

Military droid technology, like the Sentinel Droid, is advantageous for small paramilitary groups, private security forces or even large armies, where personnel are limited, need to be supplemented or when unquestioning loyalty is required. Though an older design, the Sentinel has proven it can still function as part of any military or security force and remains in use throughout the galaxy.
