The SC-401 Stun Cuffs, or better known simply as "Stun Cuffs", are upgraded versions of earlier magnacuffs. As magnacuffs came into wide usage by various law enforcement agencies and crime syndicates, it became evident that while magnacuffs kept the prisoner's hands and arms restrained, they however proved to be ineffective at preventing the prisoner from escaping on foot. To solve this issue the magnetic fields used by the magnacuffs were exploited. A clever unknown designer discovered that the magnetic field emitted by the cuffs could be manipulated to stun the prisoner, rather than using the magnetic fields to simply hold together the cuffs. This characteristic alone quickly caused the Stun Cuff to quickly replace its predecessor, and become a device that was used by most police, militia or crime syndicates throughout the galaxy.

Made of durasteel, the stun cuffs were designed to be adjustable, allowing them to fit on on any species' wrists from small Ewoks to mighty Wookiees and are lined with sensors which tighten around the prisoner's wrist if the prisoner strains against the device. In most cases, the Stun Cuffs were able to subdue the prisoners simply with the shock that is emitted by them. However many can recall where the stun cuffs could not subdue the prisoner. If the prisoner was able to resist despite the shocking feature, the cuffs would begin tightening around the prisoner's wrists and the cuffs could even break their wrist if the unruly convict continued to struggle. This caused some law enforcement agencies to refrain from using them, and instead going for the cheaper solution of binders.

As Binders continue to come into wide usage, Stun Cuffs found themselves being used less. While many governments and criminals prefer the stun cuffs, many would much rather purchase binders due to the simplicity of it's use. However, governments or criminal syndicates who must deal with overly aggressive prisoners, or prisoners who will be restrained for a longer period usually prefer Stun Cuffs. Many prisons also rely on them, thanks to the ability to use one remote for several cuffs, which allowed the prisons to control a large group of criminals with a minimum number of personnel from a safe distance of up to a fifty meter radius. All of this has allowed Stun Cuffs to maintain a presence in the modern galaxy, despite it's competition.
