First Week Guide for Star Wars Combine Newbies
You've just joined the Star Wars Combine. Now what can you do?

  1. Join a group
This is probably the most important thing you can do.

One cannot live without money, and money does not grow on trees. You need a job. Any group from the massive Galactic Empire to any number of 10 or less member groups should be able to provide a job.
Joining a group can also provide you with a great many things beyond material wealth, such as the use of a ship, people to talk to, activities to participate in, etc.
You can learn about some of the different groups at this link.

Helpful Hint: Do not choose a starting location until after joining a group. Each group has planets choosen specifically for them as starting locations. It is extremely helpful to your new group if you start on a planet where they can immediately assign you a ship.
  2. A Guide to Movement
Movement is among the most important things to learn when playing in the SWC. It gets you from your starting location to a ship, from a ship on the ground to space, and from any given point in space to another.

    Ground Movement
To move from place-to-place on the ground, you need to do the following:
    1. Find the Position link, (under ::Control:: on the sidebar)
    2. In the middle of the webpage, you should see a Travel button. Press it.
    3. On the bottom half of the screen, some other buttons should appear. Click on Terrain.
    4. Choose the coordinates and speed you desire, then press the Go button.

    Space Movement
To move from place-to-place in space, you need to do the following:
    1. Find the cockpit link, (under ::Control:: on the sidebar)
    2. In the middle of the webpage, you should see a Travel button. Press it.
    3. On the bottom half of the screen, some other buttons should appear. Click on either sublight or hyperspace.
    4. Choose the coordinates and speed you desire, then press the Go button.

More instructions for movement (and almost anything else you'd need to do) are available at: Darkness for Dummies - check the Reference Sheet

  3. Fly around the galaxy
If you're part of a group, or were lucky enough to be given a ship when you joined, you should have access to a ship. With that ship, you can travel to many places. As you travel, you can gain experience (XPs) which will eventually allow you to make your character better, stronger and faster.
If you decided to be freelance, you can fly around doing odd jobs for other people or for groups. (Those newbies that didn't take my advice about waiting on a starting location...they will need someone to get them around the galaxy.) You will be able to make some extra credits for yourself that way.

  4. Help the Combine in a OOC (Out of Character) Manner: Part 1
Server space and bandwidth cost money. In order to keep this game running, it must have a solid financial backing. One way that is accomplished is by the non-obtrusive banner advertisements on the SWC website. Another is by actually giving money to the game.
Probably the most popular, however, is the CP banners.

Combine Points (CPs) are a reward for providing OOC help to the game. You will find them listed with your character information when you log into the game. If you click on the CP link, you will find 3 pages. One of these pages has a number of tiny banners and 1 larger link (link will prompt you to log in, unless you have done so already). Clicking each of these banners and the larger link will give you CPs (but only once every 24 hours).

  5. Help the Combine in a OOC (Out of Character) Manner: Part 2
Financial help is a good way to keep the game going, but its not the only way a person can help.
If you have skills/knowledge with PHP, mySQL, general webpage design, art design, or Star Wars, you may be able to help the game in its development. The faster its developed, the sooner everyone will benefit.

  6. Help the Combine in a OOC (Out of Character) Manner: Part 3
So what if I get CPs? What are they good for?
    A very good question.

CPs can be traded in for things, for example, 5 credits per 1 CP.
There is an additional list on the SWC website. Various ships and vehicles are all available for as little as 3,800CPs (X-34 landspeeder) or as high as 370,000CPs (Carrack/I Cruiser).

There is more information available in the CP area of the website.

  7. Tracking your Inventory
The Inventory section of your member's area hold information about everything you own. It is where information about any ships, vehicles, facilities, cities, stocks, items(SoonTM) and weapons(SoonTM) is stored. This is where you go if you need to see where they are, assign them to yourself or anyone else (for usage) or get rid of them (sell, give, trade) and in general control just about every aspect of them.

Helpful Hint: No, we didn't trademark the word soon. The "SoonTM" expression is a joke among the veterans of the game. It refers to the habit of administrators, assistants and developers to answer questions about release dates of features with the simple phrase "Soon". In time, it came to be used by everyone. In developers time, SoonTM could mean any amount of time from 5 minutes to a few days, to 3 months, to over a year.
Basically, they have no idea when its going to be done, but its being worked on.
