Officials with the memorial have reported, millions assembled on the wookiee homeworld to remember the great atrocity that the Galactic Empire inflicted upon the native population. The ceremonies began with a long march headed towards the Tree of Life and then on to the beaches, where bonfires would be lit in honour of those lost on the most tragic day in their history. With the conclusion of the memorial services, many attendees would join the the native wookies spending a week in mourning. Kallakabukk, a young female Wookie who devoutely partakes in the week-long time of mourning had this to say, “...[her] mourning period allows me time to reflect upon the past, and what can be done to prevent such a horrific things from ever happening again in the future.”
Chief of State Orion Chran gave a speech to close the week of mourning for Black Forest Day, and usher in the New Year and holiday season. An excerpt follows:
“We stand here today, together, mourning the lives of those we have lost that dark day so many years ago. Though scarred by the events of the past, we are united with you, our Wookie brethren to never forget, never surrender to the forces of evil, wickedness, and the Dark Side that seek to wage war against everything we hold dear. We are saddened, but we like you are strong. We will push forward, we will give into hope over fear, prosperity over ruin, and we will never forget...We will honor our lost through action that transcends our sorrow in our pursuit to make a better Galaxy.”
With the conclusion of the service, the feeling of sadness were traditionally replaced by that of hope and goodwill as fireworks rang across the skyline. Like many cities and planets across the Republic, Kashyyyk started their new year’s celebration, Life Day.
