The Tract of Makem Te is considered one of the galaxy’s most important archaeological and cultural locations, having been listed among the galaxy’s greatest wonders as early as 10,000 years ago. The Tract is sacred to the indigenous Swokes Swokes, with every Swokes Swokes who has ever lived being either interred or memorialized there with a plaque or urn upon their death. This ritual has continued for millennia, and over ten percent of the planet’s surface is now covered in memorials, with the total number of individual monuments numbering in the trillions.
Making a pilgrimage to one’s ancestors is a rite of passage, but the journey is perilous. Access to the Tract is by foot only; ships and speeders are strictly forbidden. Travellers must cross hundreds of kilometres of harsh, unforgiving desert, constantly vigilant for the fearsome Schinga beasts that stalk the sands. Many pilgrims hoping to find the plaques of their ancestors succumb to the desert and its predators, only to have their own names added to the ever-growing list of those who perished on Makem Te.
Upon joining the Galactic Community, the Swokes Swokes decreed that a portion of their necropolis would be permanently set aside for all sentient races of the galaxy. Anyone wishing to have their name recorded within the Tract must make a considerable donation and complete the pilgrimage to their designated site. To be memorialized here is a profound honour, and the distinction is highly coveted, symbolizing both respect for the Swokes Swokes culture and the eternal remembrance of one’s life among the stars.
