Built along broadly similar lines as the Clone Wars era Venator-class Star Destroyer and Acclamator-class assault ship, the Republic Engineering Corporation’s Endurance class fleet carrier features a similar wedge-shaped main hull and aft elevated bridge superstructure. This bridge superstructure is relatively large, featuring an elongated section supporting a semi-circular bridge structure. Slightly over one thousand metres long, these ships boast an impressive internal hangar capacity, enough to hold and support operation of up to four complete fighter wings. Fighters and other light craft can land and launch via three large hangar openings – one facing forward about half way down the ship’s top side, and 1 each to port and starboard. Each of these hangar openings is approximately one hundred metres in length and fifteen metres high, meaning even light freighters can land and launch with ease, guided by the independent flight control towers located on the main hull close to the hangar openings. Endurance class fleet carriers can support the operations of their onboard wing for up to five months before needing to resupply.
Most of the carrier’s internal volume is dedicated to hangar space and engineering, leaving significantly less space to mount capital ship weapons. The Endurance does mount a number of turbolasers, strategically placed around the hull, which enables it to defend itself against light warships, as well as a large number of quad-laser turrets for dealing with attacking fighters and bombers. It also mounts a number of ion batteries, allowing it to disable enemy vessels. Despite these impressive weapons, this ship is meant to serve as the centrepiece of a naval task force, screened by other capital ships and lighter warships. Its main offensive power are its onboard fighter and bomber wings, rather than its on-board weapons. The arrival of a vessel of this class often presages a massive attack by almost two hundred fighters and bombers, and can easily turn the tide of a naval engagement.
