Planet: Iope I
Table of Contents [hide]

For most beings of the galaxy, exploring Iope I on foot without the use of a breathing mask and cold-weather survival gear would be extremely unwise. The planet's atmosphere on the surface is highly toxic due to the sub-freezing temperatures which cause the poisons in the air to sit just above the ground. The temperatures have also caused all forms of liquid on the planet's surface to freeze, including the oceans, making it appear little more than a frozen wasteland.

Geologists and other scientists who've studied Iope I say that the toxicity level of the air and the extremely low temperatures are results of the same cause. At one point in the planet's history, it was primarily covered with volcanoes which spewed poisonous gases and ash into the atmosphere. As the pollutants became denser and denser, the global temperatures began dropping and eventually became so low that the planet's crust cooled, causing the bulk of the volcanoes to become extinct; this has left patches of frozen rock and a few caves exposed on the surface. Currently, there is still one small chain of active volcanoes which continues to add to the pollution in the atmosphere; however, scientists generally agree that it will only be a matter of time before the temperatures kill off the last of the volcanoes and the whole planet is covered in ice.
