Planet: Shulstine IV
Table of Contents [hide]

The planet Shulstine IV is a large gas planet in the Shulstine system. It is a unique gas giant for several different reasons. The first of these reasons is that it has a peculiar atmosphere. The atmosphere on this planet is almost breathable. Its composition is almost entirely one of oxygen. The remaining component is one of chlorine. Although this concentration of chlorine is only approximately that of one percent it is still enough to make the atmosphere toxic. The low levels of chlorine do make it, however, that with the use of low-level filters and breathing masks eliminate the risk of immediate death that would exist otherwise.

Another aspect that makes Shulstine IV a unique gas giant is its core. While the aspect of a gas giant in itself is not overly uncommon, this particular core is. Due to the fact that the core of the planet is subject to high levels of temperature and relatively low levels of pressure, this creates the perfect conditions for creating gems. The chemical composition of the core also means that the jewels that are created here or rare and precious gems. In the days of the old Republic, before Jedi were hunted, many came to this planet to test their skills by pulling a gem from the planet's core with their minds for use in the construction of their sacred lightsabers. Since the start of the persecution of the Jedi and Galactic civil war, there are no documented accounts of this endeavor being undertaken in this system. Due to the high temperatures and low pressure that the core experiences, these gems are even more unique due to the fact that they are quite often found in liquid form, which is a rarity throughout the galaxy. Although there have been several proposals for mining the materials through both Imperial stations and through independent mining corporations, none have followed through due to the fact that the high temperatures experienced here would be very detrimental to any mining operation.

Although there would be such a large amount of difficulty in setting up a mining operation on the planet, it is a common belief that if one could be got up and running it would be a very profitable venture. The planet's core being composed of gems of the high quality and rarity that they are would hold them to very high market value. The planet also lies very close to the core of the galaxy which means that it is very close to the majority of the large trading routes. This means that the shipping costs for both delivery of products and for the delivery of the materials necessary for the construction of the actual mining establishment would be low. Although the Galactic Empire is listed as the official government on the entire system the planet retains a low taxation rate. The combination of the low shipping rates coupled with the low taxation rates allows a company to keep overhead low and therefore optimize profits.
