Yavin Prime is a Jovian world, the largest classification of gas giants, and one of the few planets in the galaxy that form rare and valuable corusca gems. The sun Yavin could have had a binary partner, but while Yavin Prime gathered the requisite fuel, it lacked the mass to ignite and become a star itself. Composed of hydrogen and helium with dense upper clouds of ammonium sulphide that give the planet a reddish orange colour, Yavin Prime circles the sun at a great distance with a year that is 4,818 days long. While the upper thermosphere does feature a thin life zone, which is occupied by several cloud cities, the air is not entirely pleasant and must be filtered.

The Yavin system was occupied by the Rakatan Empire in the distant past, although, like today, most activity took place on Yavin Prime's orbiting companions. While the lunar catalogue includes as many as twenty-six terrestrial objects, only six of them are large enough to be round. The planet has also hosted many artificial moons, the first of which was Yavin Station, a Galactic Republic supply depot. The station was abandoned after the Great Sith War in 3996 BCGT and came under the administration of Suvam Tan until degradation rendered it uninhabitable, and it eventually crashed into Yavin 22.
