At the moment NPCs have no real use other than as a role play item. NPC use is being coded.

Specifically, pilot NPCs have no use.. some of the others do.

Freighters, with the exception of a few (DST, Sentinel, Lambda, Delta, I believe) cannot be NPC-controlled. It is primarily the fighters for which that can be done, and despite the name, actual NPCs are not needed for that.
