As for this question, you may want to be more specific. Do you mean physically? Yes, travel can take time and is not instant. It doesn't necessarily take weeks, just depends on the speed of your ship and the distance you're traveling. If you mean promotions, that depends on the faction you're joining.
For flying somewhere, the higher your flight skill for either starships or Capital ships and the faster your Sublight speed is, the faster you can move around in a system. Or the faster your Hyperspeed is and the faster your skill is, the faster you get to another system.
Same principal applies with Vehicles on the ground.
If you are gonna walk some where, the higher your speed skill is, the faster it will take you to get somewhere.
And it automatically takes you an hour to go from Square to Square (Or city to city) whether you are in a vehicle or ship or on foot. It even takes you an hour to exit/enter the atmosphere or orbit.
Oh man, I was thinking I was doing something wrong. It took me 20 minutes to walk two blocks over in a city only to be unable to enter the structure.. Seems kinda crazy to take so long to get places..
What are you supposed to do while waiting? How does this hold your attention? You can play an hour and get almost no where?
Most of the game does not take place within the client, but within factions, since there are not yet many in game features available for many groups. Some find it more appealing than others. New players are always advised to join a faction as soon as possible to get started since that is where they will earn money, receive an assigned ship to get off planet, and get some work to do.
