I've played this game a good while ago (and was incredibly annoying to everyone on chat while doing so... Good times. :D Well, not for anyone involved except me, but still.) I left due to the game being way too complex for me to handle at the time. That, and people at the chat stopped unbanning me after a while. Um. ._.
This was about the time R&D (ship R&D being of the most interest to me) was removed from the game. Now, this was a goooood deal of time ago, and as I see, R&D still hasn't been reintroduced. Given that that's what I want to do most, and I don't see it anywhere on the 'Current Projects' tab... When's it coming ('Soon' is a horrible joke, don't use it pretty please with sugars on top?)?
I could have R&D skills and just roleplay stuff here, of course... But, given the heavily system-based format (as oppossed to some of the more freeform, uh, 'systems' you'd more often see on the web) an' everything, I doubt that'd be an interesting experience. Doing something that has no real in-game impact, is never too fun.
So yeah, that's question number one - any idea of when R&D is coming, or how to make it borderline feasible without any real systematic rules development?
And on to the second section - I was thinking of playing a character with some skills in diplomacy, and just have my R&D skills sleep whilst I wander around and gain some experience n' cash... Are diplomats in any demand? And if they are, would a small-ish skill level (I'm thinking 2) in Diplomacy suffice?
And finally... Given that you people have been around for a while now... What's a good faction to choose for me, with the following criteria to be judge of that: in need of characters of a somewhat diplomatic bent, or are willing to tolerate one who's skills are somewhat lacking in any really useful task; are 'neutral' or 'good' IC; and have a somewhat happy-go-lucky OOC attitude... A hefty salary would be a good bonus, 'course, but it's not a necessity.
'n I'm done. Hope for quick and informative answers, and I hope my questions didn't irritate you in any way. My main goal here is to probe possibilities - i.e., whether I'll be able to interestingly play the character design I'm leaning towards to, and that's oftentimes difficult to do without the proper environment, both IC and OOC...
R&D is slated to be fully introduced following combat. This means you have at least another year or two to go, and that is an extremely optimistic estimate.
Diplomacy has no particularly handy uses at the moment, and only reduces NPC costs and can contribute to your ability to resist arrest. Since the NPC cost discount is so low, a skill of 2 is not especially useful, and the skill in general is not in demand. Many factions still do hire diplomats (particularly larger factions, and governments), but your character skills are not nearly as important in such a position as your OOC abilities.
We cannot offer specific faction suggestions on this board as help forums cannot be used to recruit, but your best shot is to take a look at the ads in the Classifieds and on the RPG Centre. It is still the case that the majority of factions will accept anyone, regardless of their skills, since few skills have already been fully implemented and even a level 0 skill does not prevent the player from performing that particular action. The ads tend also to list the benefits offered by the faction, including salary and what positions they have available. Since you have evidently not been around for some time, currently upwards of 100K per month is considered a good salary and should be easily attainable in many factions.
As a sidenote, as you are a returning player, be aware that only level 1 accounts that have been inactive for over nine months are deleted for inactivity; no other accounts are deleted. Be sure not to inadvertently create an illegal multi. If you are not sure whether or not your old account still exists you can e-mail multi-accounts@swcombine.com for assistance and access.
If you don't mind me asking, who was your previous character? If you're able to bring him/her back, I'd be happy to help start up a Meeting Hall RP for you. Yes. I'm bored. And it's so rare that older SWC RPers actually participate there anymore.
Syn> Much thanks for the swift and informative reply. Had a character 3 or more years ago (if I'm countin' right), so I doubt the last issue be a, um, issue. ._.;
Thanks much for the info on the skill... Will probably get a rank or two in it anyway. Roleplaying without having an ability "for real" just wouldn't seem right. >.>; Even if any diplomacy that matters is probably done under the table here, as it probably is, some in-character element should remain even then.
I'd have already checked the ads if I were able to - can't without registering, though. This being on the RPG centre, at least. Are there classifieds anywhere else?
I do believe this isn't a suggestion forum, either, but (maybe you'll just let this one go :D), the RPGcentre's ads being open to view (posting being unnecessary) to guests would muchly help. As would the availability of the search function, given the rather large size and somewhat complex format of this of place. Also, given how important factions are to the game, some integration of the faction hiring system with new player information would be good, yesnoyes?
Well, maybe it already is, and becomes available at some point of the process of registration, ifin I remember things here right.
And... Well, even if I had access to ads, I still wouldn't know what they represent - that OOC factor I was talking about. Would be easy enough to find out if I had access to chat, but, well, there's the small issue of me being at work and my monitor being easily visible to any onlooker. Damned glass walls. ._.
Does it still count as 'recruiting' if I'm explicitly *asking* for this specific information, as opposed to being fed crap by corporate headhunters? :D
Wilhelm von Ismay> I went by Serjo Khalim, a Mon Cal researcher crustacean. 3 or 4 in Ship R&D, methinks. :D Felt muchly awesome... Ifin that skill were ever used, would be more awesome still. Doubt anyone who roleplayed would remember me, though... Failed all (two) attempts at roleplaying then, mostly by not writing at all. Didn't do much inside the game system, either, except for flying the squadron of, umm... X-wings, were they? somewhere I don't know where. >.>; If anyone would remember me at all, it'd be as the guy who asked to be went "Ban me!" every other ten minutes or so. Why autounban was on there at all, I'll never know.
So, probably a new character. Roughly the same concept still though, I guess... Thinking of choosing either a Mon Cal again or a Kuati. Not really a SW fan (don't kill me!), more of a generic sci-fi type, and playing a humanoid may be a wee bit more less out of touch 'ere for me.
The account Serjo Khalim still exists as it was over level 1, so you do need to continue with that account.
Yes, unfortunately even asking for faction suggestions is considered to result in recruiting; we really can't use an OOC position to try to direct you to a specific faction IC.
There is a search function for the forums, but at the moment it is not functioning properly; this is known and will hopefully be resolved when someone has time.
The new player guide does plainly direct new members to join a faction as soon as possible.
Anyway, my bad. Already re-registered, though the account in question hasn't been approved yet, to the best of my knowledge.
There's also the slight issue of me not remembering what my password is. Nor my email. ._.; Most likely to be a school e-mail, t'was the only non-mass-produced e-mail service I had access to at the time... And, well, I don't go to school anymore, meaning that that email doesn't even exist.
A silly predicament to be in. XD
I'm not even sure you'd be allowed to provide the account information to me, given that I can't really produce any credible evidence that that account is indeed mine. Well, maybe except for sort of knowing (it's been long! don't judge me!) what his skills are.
And if I can't reactivate that account, I'm likely to face reprecussions for multi use if I create a new character... >.>;
Any suggestions?
Oh, and no more problem faction-wise. Popped in on chat after work and found myself a career prospect. I'll be hauling minerals from one place to another! Whee muchly.
The domain part will probably have a "KTUG" in it (may consist entirely of it), and an .lt as the first order domain. I *may* be wrong on both counts, but it's unlikely.
If that is sufficient(ly accurate) information, please email my password to type_D_for_me @ yahoo.com
Much obliged. I was half expecting my character to be found somewhere on a star (I think his coords last time I checked WERE on a star, interestingly (and implausibly?) enough). Might play around with that idea IC.
Anyways, I guess I'm about done with this. Kudos for all the help provided.
