I know it is possible to squad up to 12 vehicles together: I just don't know how.

Same as with ships. Make sure they are all at the same location, you are in a vehicle of the same type (Sandcrawler if you want to drive around with other Sandcrawlers etc). Then go to the piloted vehicles page, and tick the boxes for all the vehicles oyu want to follow, and set their controlled status to NPC Controlled.
