I need to find out two things, how to change my password from the randomly generated one I got in the email, and how to delete this character to create a new one. My location is set and I'm pretty much stranded and unable to progress at all so I need to delete this character, but I can't find an option for either.

To change your password:

Manage->Account Settings

You'll find it on that page.

As for deleting your character, you can't. You can choose to drop your character after you've been arrested for 3 weeks, and create a new one after a week long waiting period, or you can die by being arrested and executed or flying into a sun, and wait three weeks.

I would suggest you join a faction. Most factions, if not all of them, will pick you up from wherever you are in the galaxy and provide you with a ship to use and a job to do.

I'm part of a faction, I studied for about 2 hours to pass Hapes Consortium's stupid tests and all I've gotten in return is a long list of Access Denied. It has been nearly 24 hours since then and I'm still just stranded in this city unable to do anything except rent a vehicle, talk to a select few npcs that don't help at all, and ride in circles.

Is there a number I can call somewhere? Or an email address?

The game is a slow one. 24 hours really isn't long, in game terms. If Hapes is not responding fast enough for you, you could always talk to another faction. There should also be a Starport somewhere on the planet, which you can use to access the NPC transport network, to get to other homeworlds. Hapes should be among these, so you can get closer to your new faction's HQ.

I'm on hapes in a city called haporium with a welcome center, but no starport. The npcs I've talked to will let me rent a vehicle but even though it is a lam transport I can't take it out of the city, there is a transport that can take me to the space above the planet to board another ship but not to another planet.

This game is played in real-time. That means if it takes you an hour to walk across a city in real life, it'll take you that long in SWC. If it takes you 10 days to fly through hyperspace in "real life" then it'll take you that long in SWC. SWC is modeled directly from the star wars universe, using real time. Therefore, Hapes is gonna have to come pick you up. My first characters pick-up took over a week. During that time I walked around the city to gain experience.

I can see the point in waiting when you travel in hyperspace, walking around a city in circles just doesn't strike me as a game, because it lacks that "fun" or "entertaining" element.

Many people see it that way, others do not. I personally have a rather crazy real life, and thus can't spend time on games such as Runescape or WoW where you have to be online to be gaining xp, traveling etc. The fun I find in the combine is in the RPing. I like building my character's story. I like RPing on IRC and on fac-forums. Personally, this game fits my lifestyle perfectly, because I don't have that much free-time howerver due to the nature of this game, I don't have to be online all the time.

Well, you'll probably never walk across a city ever again once you have a faction issue ship.

Oh I love Star Wars though. I was one of the first jedi in star wars galaxies back before SOE slowly took it from a great game to complete crap patch by patch. I read 25 Star Wars books, thick ones not the little kid stuff. I remember about half the total information I've sifted through over a few hours listed here in the combine. However, it isn't because of the time an action can take here that the game isn't more popular or any lack of content. The problem is simple normal options most games have like deleting a character or in the case of some games having the choice to play different characters even if it was on another server or had other restrictions. All of the simple things I learned to take for granted in every other online game I've ever played, of which I could name 50, SWC lacks completely.

The reason you feel this way, is probably because this isn't every other game. People are not allowed to delete, because then they will continue doing so until they get a FS character. That is also why there is a 3 week respawn wait. We want people to take their character seriously.

SWC's an entirely different entity from anything that I've seen out there right now though; Star Wars or not. Most of your interaction will take place with your faction and through roleplaying. If you're more of a gamer than a roleplayer, you may or may not find aspects of the site to enjoy. If you are a roleplayer though, it gives you a ton of options that only expand as time progresses.

The reasons behind those two gripes ya keep talking about are logical to the game; the lack of ability to delete a character (and the time constraints of respawning) are to dissuade would-be cheaters from repeatedly killing their characters off in hopes of the next being force sensative. And as for the multiple characters, it would be far too easy to cheat as we're all on one server (and we don't have multiple servers like you're speaking of because the actual game's focused all on one).

Hodoer, this is a browser simulation and not an MMORPG, so comparisons to MMORPGs are really looking at the wrong genre to begin with. If SWC had multiple servers or a client developed by paid programmers I'm sure you'd see different options as well as a whole different type of game, but that's not a route the Combine is able to follow. As such, everything is designed with balance in mind, for this class of game and not some other.

Year 9 Day 9 15:43
Kyrtin Hodoer

If I wanted to count non-MMORPG I could name another 50. The thing about people deleting to try and get a force S character is something you could easily fix without taking away their ability to start over entirely. Diminishing returns is a simple concept, delete once, half the chance, delete again, one quarter, delete three times & no chance for 6 months. Took me ten whole seconds to think of that, imagine if someone really worked on it. The answer to preventing exploitation isn't to throw your servers out the window. I do like how they handle account creation with real people, but it would be so simple to fix some of this.

I've seen people find ways to exploit everything, and there is always a way to prevent it without lowering the quality of the game.

Year 9 Day 9 15:47
Yet taking away the ability to kill your character to start over does in no way lower the quality of this game.

I've been captured by an enemy in the middle of a war, they're keeping me somewhere I know I'll never get rescued from and by the time I can drop my character and later respawn they'll have won a decisive victory. Oh wait! I can delete my account, respawn at my faction HQ now and jump straight into a war ship.

My ships about to be destroyed, if I die normally I have to wait to recreate...nevermind, I'll just stay here and delete at the last minute then respawn at the HQ I'm defending below and...jump straight back into a ship.

The delay before recreating is neccessary for the game to work, the ability to delete and recreate straight away would not work. When combat is released you'll presumably be able to target yourselves with weapons as you can't really stop someone setting an explosive below their feet anyway. A suicide button would pretty much be a make-do feature like OOF-AE till thats possible though so I don't really see why we don't allow it if it's not much hassle to code. With the death wait remaining however.

Any time you try to think of an exploit I can name a half dozen ways to fix it quickly.

Do not allow deletino within 3 days of being captured
Do not allow deletion within 3 days of entering combat
Allow deletion freely ONLY if no influential action has been taken and within 24 hours of initial creation, aka anything that could benifit someone else or benifit you by deleting
Do not allow your new character to join the previous character's faction for 6 months minimum
Do not allow deletion while in hyperspace
Small benifit to your enemy and long lasting penalty to you for anything I'm missing in the previous
Do not allow deletion within 5 days of yours or someone else's property being destroyed
Do not allow combat or trading within 1 week of recreation
Do not allow deletion after FS testing

I can keep going but the point is simple, if you destroy basic game dynamics because you can't fix exploits then you fail at your job/hobby/life, possibly all of the above. If you can't see that then, well I'd hate to be you.

And I'm sure if you can code these things the admins may take some of them into consideration.

This game is made by it's players, so if you have the free time to fix these "errors" or "omissions" (however YOU would like to say it) go ahead and see if they make it into the game.

Otherwise, please enjoy the game as it is, instead of complaining about a game that you wish you could play. Stop acting like a noob "know-it-all," your only embarrassing yourself

This game has had people enjoying it for a long time now, just like it is. And many of us have no plans on leaving! :)

Well said, Matt.

"Do not allow deletino within 3 days of being captured"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"Do not allow deletion within 3 days of entering combat"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"Allow deletion freely ONLY if no influential action has been taken and within 24 hours of initial creation, aka anything that could benifit someone else or benifit you by deleting"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"Do not allow your new character to join the previous character's faction for 6 months minimum"

Senseless. Learn the difference between IC and OOC. OOC I'd agree with you, but not IC.

"Do not allow deletion while in hyperspace"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"Do not allow deletion within 5 days of yours or someone else's property being destroyed"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"Do not allow combat or trading within 1 week of recreation"

Senseless. IC characters have a life before they entered the place they were. You weren't magically summoned as an adult or whatever you are. Surely before you became you who are, you did something, which is why you have skills.

"Do not allow deletion after FS testing"

Doesn't happen anyway.

"I can keep going but the point is simple, if you destroy basic game dynamics because you can't fix exploits then you fail at your job/hobby/life, possibly all of the above. If you can't see that then, well I'd hate to be you."

In addition to what Matt said, I suggest you learn a little more about the game before you complain about it. Complaining that you can't run even though you can't even crawl yet doesn't exactly make you look good.

Oh and by the way, there is no such thing as "character deletion". If you mean death, then find someone that is willing to kill you, or fly into a sun one way or another. Soon you will be able to jump into lava (for instance) and die that way as well, without having to go into space.
If you mean "account deletion", you can't delete your account either. And if you make a new account in addition to your old account, you will be banned for breaking the multi-account rules.

Also, for clarification:
IC - In character, so Kyrtin Hodoer
OOC - Out of character, so the player behind Kyrtin Hodoer

So you want to put in place a minimum of 9 rules, with accompanying coding, when one simple rule and piece of coding covers all of them already?

If you want to destroy all progress on the game by multiplying the rules and coding tenfold, then you fail at common sense, and I'd hate to be you.

Let me put this as bluntly as I can:
If you don't have the patience to kick around a planet for a few days - if you can't find something to occupy your time waiting for pick up - then you won't make it in this game, and you should quit now.

So either shut up, or go away.
