I have riflemen and I bought armour, guns, ammo, backpacks, the works for them. How do I equip those? Since, they are riflemen there has to be a way to atleast equip a gun, right?

Nope, no NPC can be equipped with any item at this moment in time.
Boxstackers can pick up similar items to what oyu pick up, but they can't use them, and put them down when you do.
