OWL—Gladiators For You
Posted by: Ragnar Masha, The Hyporian Commonwealth
Date: Year 21 Day 139 Onboard the Quasar Fire-class Bulk Cruiser [THC] Lady of Garos in system Derra (71, -166).

In a galaxy already darkened by an endless state of war amid a plethora of distinct factions vying for control, do we truly require a violent sport to appease our need for adrenaline and excitement? The answer is yes, according to Ragnar, the Wild Blade of the Masha family, and many of the fans that are anxiously awaiting the debut fight of the recently formed Olympian Warriors League. We sat down with the Gamorrean in charge of the OWL, as it was branded, as well as his first opponent, the Anzat gladiator Darius Andromeda. The agreed location of our interview is a Spacelane Diner named the Hog Wild Tavern, peacefully floating in the atmosphere right above the only enclave of civilization left on Derra IV—Outbreak Response City. It seemed only fitting, and perhaps ironic, that the Olympian Warriors League would operate on a world stricken by a sickness (the Great Animosity Plague) that leads to unspeakable aggression, violence and insanity in its victims. “All of our bouts will unfond on Derra IV,” Ragnar Masha confirmed. “We believe this is a prime location for the OWL.”

The Hog Wild Tavern lived up to its name, with plenty of loud customers imbibing a variety of spirits while relaxing in the quaint environment of a Spacelane Diner. We were promptly offered a generous selection of alcoholic beverages and food items, but we decided to focus on the two sentients sitting across the other side of our booth, at the end of the main room. “I am an Admiral and a Recruitment Liaison for the Hyporian Commonwealth,” the Gamorrean explained when asked if the OWL was his primary occupation. “And until very recently, I was a Marine in the Tolondan Military,” Darius Andromeda added. “Though, I suppose that would be the Sith Imperium now.”

Who are these sentients ready to do violence in the name of entertainment and a mutual passion for strategy, tactics and combat? Ragnar Masha appeared to be a rather eloquent individual, and we couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t look like the average Gamorrean. He explained to us that he possesses a vocabulator implant that allows him to speak proper Galactic Basic, and that his gene splicing with a human has given him the correct anatomy to articulate precise words, like other sentients are able to. “I was a little more than an experiment amongst crazed scientists.I was rescued and taken in by Solarius Masha and Nikolaj Eyre. I owe them my life and have offered them my spear.”

“And I’ve been a bit of everything,” Darius continued. “Freelance Mercenary, mostly: I just followed the money. I suppose I got tired of that game though, and the prospect of a home began to sound better than anything else.”

The two combatants sounded like they had long and interesting stories to share, but we traveled across the stars to hear more about the upcoming Olympian Warriors League. Unveiling their past would have been for another interview. We decided to bring our attention back to the business of violent sports, asking how the OWL came about. “It’s the gold that came out of the fire that was the GGA,” Ragnar Masha explained, referencing the Galactic Gladiators Association. “Unfortunately, the GGA has many flaws. I believe the OWL to be the perfect creation.” When asked to further comment on the split that has led Ragnar out of the GGA, he politely refused, stating that his attention is solely on the Olympian Warriors League and its prosperous future.

“It sounded like a good hobby. Something to vent my frustrations, and what some might call my… racial predisposition to violence. I just feel at home out here,” Darius said when we asked why he has joined the OWL as a combatant.

Ultimately, what is Olympian Warriors League and what does it hope to accomplish? “My vision for the OWL is to bring entertainment and bloodshed to the galaxy,” Ragnar said. “It is a way to find out how much talk some people truly are by giving them a way to back up their crap with blades and blasters. I want to provide gladiatorial entertainment for sentients across our galaxy. A way to enrich the dull unfulfilling lives of the warrior without work and to create the foundation for what could be the biggest fight that Derra has ever seen.” Ragnar’s words were fueled with passion, no doubt.

We asked Darius what he wishes to accomplish within the OWL. “Honestly, I haven't really thought too much about it. I suppose, more than anything, I want to do what I can to keep it growing and expanding, so that those like myself can become stronger, and get paid while doing it. The OWL is where we can make a name for ourselves, instead of becoming a nameless corpse in some mud hole no one has ever even heard of.”

What shall we witness from these two fighters? What are their favorite methods to do violence? “Close the distance. And kill,” Ragnar answered coldly. “My Pike, Kaladanda, thirsts for the blood of my enemies. She whispers the names of fallen kings as I strike. She is the spear that never misses its mark. The blade that never dulls in the clash.”

A very different approach for Darius. “I am mostly preferential to mid range combat. I am aware that many are my betters in a melee fight, and while I am willing to do what it takes to complete a mission, I find the long rifle to be a more cowardly weapon. Mid range is where the fight has the best chance to evolve, while still giving me the room I need to make tactical decisions.”

The Olympian Warriors League will be strictly regulated to ensure fairness and avoid fatal incidents, but does honor and a sense of pride play a role in this venture? “Honor is in everyone,” Ragnar answered. “We are each born with honor and we each die with what we have left. Honor is in being valorous in battle, purity of heart, and true to your word. Whether one is pure evil or pure good.”

“Growing up by the old way of Anzat, I was taught that there is no honor, only dead and not dead,” Darius said. “Admittedly I still struggle with that concept, because once I made my way into the greater galaxy, and met some of the crews I did, I realized that honorable combat has its own rewards, and a cleaner feel to it. So yes, I think I am an honorable fighter, when I feel the situation allows me to be.”

Finally, we asked what we believed to be the most pressing question in our mind. Is our chaotic galaxy ready to embrace the Olympian Warrior League? “This wretched Galaxy, so complacent with the status quo, is only biding its own implosion into chaos,” Ragnar firmly stated. “People grow anxious, warriors brandish their spears, politicians sharpen their tongues. The time to bring blood is now.”

“It is because of that very chaos that I am sure the OWL will be widely accepted,” Darius followed. “We, all of us, across the galaxy, crave violence. We want thrills and dramatic stories of blood. Add in the ability to gamble and it plays on the vice-craving nature within us all.”

The Olympian Warrior League has already opened shop and is currently accepting applications from the multitude of fighters across the galaxy. Any sentient yearning to showcase battle prowess is free to join the league, upon agreeing to respect its spirit and the rules that govern the proceedings of such dangerous confrontations. Spectators will also be able to bet on the fights, and hopefully profit as they are entertained by the OWL gladiators. Other job opportunities might be available as this venture will continue to expand in the near future. Whether you wish to test yourself in bloody battle, or to simply witness a spectacle of violence, you are invited to seek out the Olympian Warriors League’s official Holonet group, where you will be able to get all the information you need on the OWL rules and regulations, the roster of gladiators, and all the upcoming bouts on Derra IV.

We shall keep our eyes on this growing business of blood sports. For now, this has been the Independent Galactic News, live from Derra IV.
