| While the R3 was developed specifically for the Empire, there were those who wanted a simple little droid to help around the service hangar or help on the family YT-1300 transport, not fit into combat starfighters. The R4 was specifically designed with the average consumer in mind. The R4 was stripped of all but the most basic of tools and programming, allowing the user to program in what he or she wanted. In most cases, however, the R4 was a serious step back from the wonderful R2, and users often found the R4's extremely annoying. The R4 was really the first astromech flop. As a result, many R4's have been extensively modified by their owners. |
