A type of tall tree native to the night world of Umbara, Zabrak Spines have pitch black trunks crowned with upward reaching branches that are tipped with bioluminescent red points somewhat resembling the cranial horns of Iridonian Zabrak, hence its common name. With no sunlight whatsoever reaching the planet’s surface, plant life on Umbara has taken different evolutionary paths to their cohorts on more sunlit worlds. Zabrak Spines, in common with most native plants attract small flying creatures with bioluminescent lures, snaring them with sticky sap that oozes from pores on the red tips of the branches. This sap is rich in digestive enzymes that gradually dissolve the unfortunate creatures, the nutrient laden sap then being re-absorbed through pores lower down the branches. Zabrak Spines grow slowly, as might be expected with such an unpredictable nutrient source, combined with high levels of competition not just from other Zabrak Spines but from other tree species. A two metre tall Zabrak Spine may be over a decade old, and the larger specimen around five metres may be well over a century in age.
