Planet: Quenus
Table of Contents [hide]

The gas giant Quenus lies in the Chandrila System. This planet does not have any solid surfaces, its gaseous material simply becomes denser as one moves toward the center of mass. Near the center, scientists theorize that the bulk of the Quenus core is made of liquid metallic hydrogen, a rare ionized form of the gas element that is only possible under tremendous pressure. The surface is dominated by violent storms with winds measuring as high as one thousand kilometers per hour.

An interesting phenomenon observed on Quenus is that at different latitudes the planet rotates at different rates. While the gasses rotate around the planet axis near the same rate the axis rotates, the gasses closer to the equatorial belt rotates at a much slower rate. It gives the planet its distinctive patterns on the surface. However, it is known that a number of other gas giants elsewhere behave similarly, largely depending on the angle of their axis as well as the mass of the gasses that make up the gas giant.

Quenus has a significant magnetosphere, reaching as far as the orbit of Chandrila. When this gas giant is at its orbit's closest point to Chandrila, the popular planet often finds certain frequencies interfered or completely disrupted by the electromagnetic rays produced from the center of Quenus. It is an inconvenience to Chandrilans for generations now, but there has not been any cost-efficient solution to this menace. It seems to be nothing more than a regular inconvenience that people had grown accustomed to. Recently, however, many clever inventions boosting signals over the interfered frequencies seem to have addressed the problem.

Recently many Chandrila-based mining conglomerates are beginning to harvest the gasses found on Quenus. The storms are violent and often cause catastrophic disasters with large unmanned mining ships, but the gasses successfully harvested appear to contribute a large profit margin for these companies. The gasses mined are used in various ways, everything from being used in manufacturing vacuum tubes to transforming tibanna gas into more potent explosives. With the growing size of these conglomerate executives' mansions and antique car collections, one can only conclude that the mining investment ventures to Quenus are paying off handsomely.
