Kastla is a small, barren world incapable of supporting life. Thousands of years ago, the planet was covered by a large ocean dotted with a few islands. The ocean supported an aquatic ecosystem, featuring a species of large Kasltar. The Kasltar Fish were discovered by a group of students on an extended biological survey, who found the Kasltar to be very palatable, and upon graduation, founded a company to harvest and sell the fish.

The students made billions exporting both fresh and salted Kasltar to gourmet restaurants across the galaxy. They were eventually given the opportunity to join the Intergalactic Kasltar Consortium, a cutthroat cooperative of Kasltar producers that fixed production and distribution to maintain unreasonably high prices. The students, not agreeing with their rapacious business practices and not wanting to share their profits, refused the offer.

The Intergalactic Kastlar Consortium responded sourly to this rejection and began making threats to the students, flying over their fishing piers on Kastla and dropping hundreds of dead Kastlar as a not-so-subtle message. The threatened students hired hundreds of mercenaries to defend their Kasltar interests. The mercenaries raided an ICC convoy, destroying tens of millions of Kasltar and provoking a response from the consortium.

In the ensuing Kastlar Wars, the students and their mercenaries battled the ICC. The raids and counter-raids grew increasingly severe, costing both sides millions of credits and kilotons of Kastlar. After three years of fighting, the ICC procured a small flotilla of frigates and bombarded the surface of the planet. The bombardment was so severe and so prolonged that it burned away the atmosphere and evaporated the oceans.

The students lost both their base of income and their will to fight after this act and faded away into oblivion. The only evidence of their existence is a few petrified fishing piers and some fossilized Kastlar skeletons, although generations of restaurateurs pass down the legend of the delicious Kastlar Fish.
