Planet: Bestal
Table of Contents [hide]

Deep, vibrant blue oceans cover nearly the entire planet of Bestal, the third planet in the system named after it. Running askew to the equator, following the orbital plane of the planet, is a strong current formed by the heat of the Bestal star. This swiftly moving stream of water creates quite an unusual sight; a massive river, hundreds of kilometers wide, dividing the northern and southern oceans. On the surface, this movement creates strong tidal forces that expand away from the ocean divide that grow as they traverse Bestal. When combined with extreme storm winds, waves have been known to reach over fifty meters in height before crashing into waves from the opposing side of the planet.

Underneath the turbulent waves, in the calm depths, aquatic life is abundant. Regions close to the trans-planetary current benefit from the flow of warm water. Over the course of millions of years, massive structures of coral reefs have risen from the underwater strata. Here the underwater life is most vibrant. Species range in size from the microscopic bioluminescent plankton that swim in colonies numbering in the billions, to the apex leviathans stretching a kilometer in length. As one marine biologist studying Bestal put it, no matter the size of the fish you have found, there is always a larger one.

In the northeast hemisphere of the watery planet, a lone mountain range breaks through the liquid surface. Made of brilliant white limestone, the cliffs of these monumental pillars stand in stark contrast to the blue oceans. Witnessing the massive waves break against the unyielding walls is a spectacular sight as the sounds of crashing water is deafening.

For millennia Bestal was uninhabited, the only usable space located in the lone mountain range. Lately, however, a large manufacturer has invested copious amounts of resources into the planet. Developing technology to calm the waves was paramount to building massive floating cities around the planet. These floating platforms are heavily industrialized, utilizing the virtually unlimited water sources to help cool heavy machinery. The location of these operations is especially helpful in the expedient processing of the minerals mined from the neighboring Kadal asteroid field. While some ecological experts have expressed concern about the possible environmental impact on the otherwise untouched ocean, there has been little to no concrete evidence that permanent damage has occurred.
