Planet: Nelvaan
Table of Contents [hide]

The planet of Nelvaan hadn't always been the cold, frigid world that it is now. Long before the arrival of the galactic community onto the planet's doorstep, Nelvaan's high volcanic activity had given rise to vast stretches of fertile grasslands and vibrant jungles in a global climate that was warm and temperate across most of its surface. The only remnants of those days are a few stretches of rolling plains and patches of humid rainforest along the planetary equator, where many of the surviving native lifeforms of Nelvaan remain. For example, the Arlenian Howler, a sub-species of gundark endemic to the planet, can sometimes be observed swinging through the forest canopy, while the siltcrawlers dig deep burrows beneath the ground to hibernate and seek shelter from the reptilian horaxes hunting for their burrows.

Most notably, the planet of Nelvaan is home to the sentient but, until recently, primitive Nelvaanians, a race of blue-furred lupine humanoids, who worship their homeworld as a divine entity they call the "Great Mother." These people live largely in a tribal society where chieftains and shamans give guidance and leadership to their people, with their religion forming a fundamental part of their culture. It's why the Nelvaanians wouldn't let any outsiders step onto their sacred homeworld, let alone try to settle it, for many centuries after the Bothans discovered it around six hundred years ago.

It was only during the Clone Wars that the enterprising Skakoans managed to establish their first outposts on Nelvaan, which were powered by massive geothermal power plants called siphon generators. Yet the catastrophic effect of those machines was that the planet was plunged into an ice age that saw much of its native flora and fauna die off, as most of its surface became covered in snow and ice. With the Nelvaanians retreating to the few remaining stretches of grasslands and jungles around the planetary equator, the Skakoans continued to establish new bases of commerce and industry, gradually opening up the planet to the greater galactic community while simultaneously plunging the world deeper into its current frozen state.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Koobi system as well as the planet of Nelvaan came under the control of the Rebel Alliance. Recognising the injustice inflicted by the Skakoans on the native Nelvaanians, the Rebel Alliance forced the former to pay damages to the latter in the form of new settlements that the lupine natives of the planet could inhabit and to return much of the land that had been appropriated by the Skakoans. This saw the Nelvaanians go through a major societal and cultural shift, where their younger generations became acquainted and familiar with standard technology. In recent times, this has resulted in a rapid and massive increase in urban development, largely sponsored by the Skakoans, which has resulted in a large portion of Nelvaan's frigid surface being covered in a new, gleaming urbanscape.
