Thousands of years ago, when hyper travel was in its infancy, Corynth became one of the first systems to be colonized. The explorer who found the system, Daven Fornyti, named the primary planet and the system itself after his wife who died on the expedition, Corynthia Fornyti. While the scientific exploration of the system continued, Daven Fornyti died of a heart attack as they neared a small planet. As a sign of respect, the crew named the tropical planet they were heading to after the then deceased couple, Fornyti and then proceeded to bury the scientist’s body on the surface of the planet.
Later as time passed, many people growing tired of their lives on other planets hopped aboard a number of government shuttles in hopes of colonizing the system. The Colonization of Corynthia as it was called was one of the first truly successful colonization efforts in the galaxy. Over the years, the businesses started to grow and the government became corrupt by allowing corporations to influence politics. As time progressed even further, the government changed. No longer was the system under the control of a political government with different corporations pulling the strings but instead, separate corporate states.
For centuries the corporations ruled, setting up trade hubs on each of the planets. Even as a collective effort to continually bring in more credits, they built a station called “Corynthia’s Gate”. The station was a sign to the corporations of a new era full of economic prosperity. To the poor sentients under their control, it was a sign that if they didn’t act soon, they would be stuck under the corporations control forever. Secretly, the people formed a rebellion and hijacked a shuttle bound for the new station. Once there they took control of the station and sent a signal to the mercenary group to come fight for them. Agreeing only after being promised a hefty sum, the mercenary group headed out to Corynth immediately.
The ensuing war lasted decades. The mercenaries were better trained and were able to use superior tactics to destroy the corporate fleets, but the companies had numbers on their side, drawing battles out for months.
The final battle was actually won by sheer luck, divine intervention, or a massive coincidence depending on your point of view. As the two fleets lined up to duke it out once again, the sun flared, destroying all but a few ships on both sides and knocked a number of asteroids out of their usual orbit. Taking advantage of the situation, the mercenaries recovered their losses and pressed the attack. In the end, the mercenaries were able to wipe out the remaining corporate fleets.
At the end of the war, as the people celebrated around the system their freedom, the planet Fornyti was destroyed when the asteroids knocked off course smashed into the surface. The remains of the planet spread out over the system forming an asteroid ring pulling in the remaining hulks and wrecks of the war. Seeing this devestation, a majority of systems populace gave up holding on to the war scorched system and packed up, leaving the once busy economic hub in ruin.
