The Altarrn system is located at the far edge of the Calaron sector. It consists of the sun, Altarrne, and three planets, all of which support a large diverse set of flora and fauna. Due to the favourable climates found on the planets, they have been used as supply bases for launching expeditions into deep space for many years.
Of the many indigenous life forms found in this system, the Belerrn, stands out as one of the most important creatures. Early settlers soon found that this large, horse-like creature could be easily domesticated and were suited to carrying very heavy loads between the developing cities.
An odd curiosity of the system is that it has a higher than average concentration of heavy metals and other useful minerals. Scientists theorise that the system may have formed relativity late compared to other systems in the sector and as such, Altarrne formed from the remnants of metal rich stars. These stars would have greatly increased the concentration of heavy metals present in the gaseous nebulae that would one day collapse and form the Altarrn system.
The history of this system is quite unique. It was first discovered very early in the days of the Old Republic, but the report on the system was misfiled and completely lost within the governmental records on Coruscant. Eventually the report was found and the process of colonisation began, with the earliest settlers having a far easier time colonising it than many of their comrades in other systems.
Due to its large mineral resources there have been many battles in its history, with many groups vying for control of the mines. One such battle that occurred resulted in the destruction of a large capital ship. The remains of this ship can be found strewn across all three planets in the system and poses a hazard to anyone foolish enough to attempt to salvage its toxic and highly radioactive engine core. Attempts to clean up the mess have always hit a dead end as no one will accept responsibility for the debris.
