Constructed at the dawn of the Second Antiquity Era, the Fountain Palace is a display of magnificent splendour and exquisite craftsmanship and arguably the most majestic of the three Royal Hapan Palaces ever built. Situated at the heart of the capital city of Chume'Dan, it serves as the primary residence of the Royal Family and as their seat of power on Hapes.
Considered among the architectural wonders of the galaxy, the Fountain Palace was originally built under the orders of Queen Mother Dal'kuran I as a symbol of the power and great wealth of the Hapan Crown. The palace upon its completion would go on to serve as the primary royal residence uninterrupted for the remainder of the Age of Queen Mothers, some 1900 years, until it became severely damaged during the horrific fighting of the Hapan Civil War. It would be decades after the end of the war that the reunified Consortium could afford to consider the gargantuan cost of the needed repairs for the palace. Only once the Hapes Consortium’s blooming prosperity during the Age of Kings could fully support it did the massive restoration efforts begin in earnest. Sparing no expense, the renovations fully restored its former glory, its final form even surpassing its prior grandeur. While the cost of the years-long rebuilding and refurnishing project is not publicly known, it was said that the reconstruction of the central dome in Ice Moon material alone was of such exorbitant cost as to be comparable to the annual tax income of a prosperous planet as a whole, to say nothing of the extravagant flora and exotic fauna required to complete the gardens, as well as of the millions of tonnes of other valuable gems such as berubian, vertex and lowickan used for external friezes and internal decoration.
While the palace interior is an astonishing display of innumerable pieces of art and furnishings within its breathtaking rooms and captivating terrace gardens, the Fountain Palace derives its name from the dozens of elaborate and elegant water features scattered across the palace grounds, ranging from the smallest decorative element to one of almost fifty metres across, which is situated as a centrepiece of the northern portion of the extravagant gardens that surround the palace complex. Most incorporate intricate and detailed statuary, and some also serve as monuments or tributes to famous rulers and citizens of times long past.
Additionally, in keeping with its secondary role as a fortress intended to withstand a heavy assault, not all of the palace’s iconic towers and turrets are mere aesthetic structures, as numerous weapon emplacements are housed in carefully concealed mounts. Similarly, the sizeable subterranean portions of the palace provide ample room for not only storage and housing staff but also hosting a considerable detachment of the Chume'doro troops that are permanently stationed on the palace grounds.
