Planet: Koobi I
Table of Contents [hide]

Koobi I is the only gas giant in the entire system. Although many of the planets in the system remain terrestrial this planet has somehow formed entirely out of volatile gases.

The planet being in the constant of turmoil that it is, has constant flares of gas and energy that can tamper with sensor systems across the entire system. The plan has been known to give off strong enough waves that scientific vessels that are in a close proximity have all of their sensors burnt out. This constitutes a certain level of danger when traveling near the planet because a ship that loses its sensors has no way of communicating with other planets or establishments in the system. Without the sensor package a ship also has no way of gauging the gravitational pull that Koobi I is exerting upon them and can therefore find themselves getting sucked into the planet and being destroyed. This danger when traveling in proximity of the planet leads to a lack of scientific knowledge of the planet. Unmanned drones that are often lost to the planet are the only real source of knowledge regarding the planet. Although the planet dimensions are in a constant state of fluctuation it is also considered to be one of the larger planets in the system. This fact paired with the problems involved with traveling near the planet quite often leads to large sections of the system being classified as impassable. This sphere of impassable space is in constant orbit around the sun. Due to the fact that the system has such a large dangerous section that is constantly moving most travel into the system requires a preliminary jump into the fringes of the system to survey where the trouble spot is current located and then another mini-jump to the desired position in the galaxy. This same condition also can hinder the travel out of the system as some flights will either wait for the appropriate time to depart or will make a similar mini-jump to line themselves up for a clear shot out of the system.

Due to the varying dimensions and the ever-changing gravity wells surrounding the planet hyperspace jumps in any amount of proximity to this body can be very tricky. Many of the seasoned pilots in the system will deactivate the gravity alarms and cut-outs on their navigational computers while in-system. This is not a recommended practice forever because doing this does not give a warning as to the shifts in the planets gravity wells and has resulted in the death of many pilots and the destruction of their ships. Koobi I has little value in the system and is viewed by many as a simple hindrance. Many denizens of the system however like the difficulties that it causes within the system because they feel that the unsafe travel will help keep much of the traffic of the galaxy out of the system. Most of the people who share this view are the people of the system who fled here in hopes of escaping the war and wish to simply appreciate the simplicity and innocence that comes with a life of solitude.
