Auril is the only planet in the Auril system. Its atmosphere is frigid, and the surface is rent by a tremendous amount of volcanic activity, making it a deadly environment to explore. Toxic fumes released by constant vulcanism have poisoned the air, although many species of wildlife have adapted over the millennia and continue to thrive on Auril's treacherous landscape. Due to the extreme heat of the magma flows and cold from the tundra, there are some areas of the planet with jagged fields of bare rock and an abundance of underground caves where wampa dens can occasionally be found.

Because of the inhospitable conditions, the planet is only sparsely populated. The only notable settlements are a defensive garrison and a research facility monitoring the seismology and geology of the planet. Auril was considered for an observatory at one point, but lingering smoke plumes from the volcanos ended that prospect.
