Ios lacks atmosphere and research suggests that at no time did it support life. At some point in prehistory, its surface was riddled with the asteroids, possibly debris originating from the breakup of a sister planet. The foreign bodies left deposits of a blue, iridescent mineral within the craters. The soft stone has been mined for pigments but has no other known uses, besides giving the cold planet its azure glow.
