Planet: Broest
Table of Contents [hide]

The planet Broest is a testament to the ingenuity of sentient species and their indomitable will to settle even the most inhospitable corners of the galaxy and make them liveable. Nearly the entire surface of this cold celestial orb with no breathable atmosphere has been covered by vast habitats that provide artificial gravity and oxygen. Yet, these superstructures are not meant to provide shelter for billions of living beings that normally reside upon city-worlds like Broest. Instead, the gargantuan transparisteel domes and colossal habitat blocks house acres upon acres of artificially formed and fertilised arable lands, its bountiful harvests providing sustenance to billions living in the ecumenopolises of the Core Worlds. Huge spaceports built into habitat structures across the globe send out and receive hundreds of massive freighters capable of transporting Broest’s foodstuffs across the stars on a daily basis; the lines of interstellar traffic flowing from and to the planet often being described as the arteries pumping lifeblood into the Core Worlds.

Broest was acquired by Salliche Agricultural Corporation, or Salliche Ag, shortly after its founding by House Harbright in the aftermath of the formation of the Galactic Republic roughly 25,000 years ago. Vast amounts of credits, with generous subsidies from the Republic’s nascent coffers, were pumped into the construction of the habitat superstructures and its agricultural facilities that encased the entirety of Broest’s surface. As a result, Coruscant became this world’s primary customer, which pumped enormous sums of wealth into the coffers of the planetary administration and House Harbright’s private accounts. Over the millennia that followed, Salliche Ag expanded the planet’s agricultural amenities exponentially, as other city-worlds from the wealthy Core invested in their own facilities on Broest to secure sustenance for their own rapidly growing populations. As such, Broest remained a faithful member of the Galactic Republic across the aeons since its formation and loyally continues to serve the needs of the Imperial administration on Coruscant in the present.

While formally classified as an ecumenopolis, Broest’s population is nearly insignificant when compared to the billions upon billions living on the Core Worlds. The millions that do live within the vast habitat superstructures of this planet are mostly farmers, technicians, overseers, and their families employed by Salliche Ag in the name of the Galactic Empire. Much of the planet’s agricultural operations are entirely mechanised; a significant number of non-humans can be found ploughing the fields, harvesting fruits and vegetables, or processing them into the preferred forms of nutrition of the Core Worlds, while humans predominantly fulfil managing and overseeing roles. Most of the residential blocks on the planet are constructed in a way that conserves space, so as to ensure as much of the available surface within the habitats is used for agriculture. However, the lords and counts of House Harbright own a number of monumental plantations and estates within the domed structures their ancestors had built, of which the largest easily dwarf Broest’s smallest residential structures.
